We are a small group of activist from California State University, San Marcos. Our mission is to create a cycle of healthy eating habits for children. We are inspired by Jamie Oliver’s mission to inspire our youths .

We can inspire children by growing gardens in pots, shopping at Farmer’s Markets, and also by preparing food together.

Food Day is a nationwide celebration and a movement for healthy, affordable, and sustainable food celebrated in October. BUT– why not celebrate this everyday by eating real food and inspiring others.

Our children’s health is at the top of our priority. One of the greatest things that can aid in the process of keeping our children healthy is a well balanced and healthy diet. The benefits of a child having a healthy diet are numerous, just to name a few, a child who has a healthy diet is better able to retain what they learn in school, has more energy and is better able to fight off sickness and infection. Having a well balanced and nutritious diet does not have to be difficult. The most important part of having a healthy diet is the actual ingredients we use. Here are a few helpful and easy tips to keep in mind when looking at food and how to get the most nutritious and safe items for our children!

Buy Organic!   

Although organic foods may cost you a little more, the benefits long term are priceless! There are so many advantages to buying organic. When you buy foods that are organic they are hormone free. Hormones are put into our food (mostly poultry) to make it bigger. Organic foods are also free of any herbicides and pesticides. These chemicals are used to kill any kind of insect or bug that poses a threat to the crop. Trace amounts of these chemicals are still on the plant when they come into our homes. Another benefit of buying organic foods is the impact on the environment. Often times chemicals that traditional farmers use can get into the community’s water supply….  scary.

Stay Away From Foods With GMOs!  

What are GMOs? A GMO (genetically modified organism) is the result of a laboratory process of taking genes from one species and inserting them into another in an attempt to obtain a desired trait or characteristic, hence they are also known as transgenic organisms. This process may be called either Genetic Engineering (GE) or Genetic Modification (GM); they are one and the same. What’s the problem with GMOs? They were never intended for human consumption but now make up of 70% of packaged foods. When tested on lab rats they caused a large range of reproductive problems and organ failure.

Where and How to Buy Organic/ GMO Foods?  

The best place to find these foods are your local farmers market. The vendors there are local farmers and growers that can tell you firsthand about their farming techniques. They are also local and you will be supporting the local economy. Another option is your local health food stores. Also, large chain grocery stores are starting to have organic sections. Pay attention to labels.
